Motera: A video of a foreign national who entered the field of the Narendra Modi stadium when the final match of ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 was ongoing has surfaced. The accused Wen Johnson who is currently in one-day police custody can be seen climbing and jumping a tall fence and later also jumping the LED screens on the boundary to reach Virat Kohli with a flag of Palestine.

Johnson who has done such stunts in the past in international sports events was wearing a pro-Palestine t-shirt when he did this stunt. It can be seen in the video that security persons tried to catch Johnson and stop him, but he was running like a sprint runner and jumping like an athlete.   Policemen and others couldn’t match his speed in order to capture him, and couldn’t overpower him to stop him from entering the field.

Johnson had gone closer to Indian cricket star Virat Kohli who was batting on the pitch. Johnson had touched Kohli. This was a major security breach and an embarrassing situation for the city police, as the union Home Minister Amit Shah was in the stadium. Also, the match had a terror threat from abroad. Johnson was not violent and his intentions didn’t seem to harm anyone, but he just exposed the loopholes and limitations of security in such a high-profile match.

In order to jump the fence, Johnson seems to have been caught with a slight injury and bleeding in one of his palms. On earlier occasions, he had entered the field to catch attention and to highlight the message of war against Ukraine. A Ticktoker has been booked under two sections of the Indian Penal Code. A case was first registered against him in Chandkheda police station but later the probe was handed over to the Ahmedabad city crime branch.

Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi took this breach in security very seriously and summoned the city police commissioner and other related officers to the State capital Gandhinagar. The Government of India next year is going to bid Ahmedabad for hosting the year 2036 Olympic games. Such a security lapse that just occurred in a few moments is being taken very seriously at all levels.

Johnson works as mason and solar fitter. He had booked match ticket two months ago. He is resident of Sidney in Australia, but his father is Chinese and his mother is from Philippines. He was fined 500 USD for entering FIFA women’s world cup final match in 2023 and USD 220 when he entered the field of Rugby match in 2020. He had arrived in Ahmedabad on 11 November from Delhi. On 12 November he had searched Alka Inn hotel in Mirzapur in Google. Police is investigating, whom he had met during 11-19 November stay in Ahmedabad and why he choose to highlight Palestine cause.

An inquiry has been ordered against 16 cops who were responsible for that location. Sector one Add CP Chirag Koradiya has been handed over the probe.
