Ahmedabad: During his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, now the Prime Minister of India, demonstrated a profound dedication to safeguarding the sanctity of the iconic Sabarmati Ashram amidst the construction of the Ahmedabad Metro.

Padma Shri E Sreedharan, popularly known as the Metro Man of India, reminisces about PM Modi’s resolute approach, emphasizing that the then Chief Minister recognized the historical significance of the Sabarmati Ashram and went a step further. He actively engaged in the planning process, leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the construction of the metro station did not disturb the tranquillity of the revered Ashram and its visitors.

Beyond acknowledging the Ashram’s importance, he proactively sought alterations to the original metro plan. This strategic adjustment aimed to minimize any potential chaos or disruption that the metro station’s construction might inflict on the Ashram’s surroundings. PM Modi’s foresight and attention to detail underscored his commitment to the seamless integration of modern infrastructure with historical landmarks.

Sreedharan also recalled how PM Modi told his secretary that, ‘Before Mr. Sreedharan leaves Ahmedabad, the letter for DMRC to prepare the DPR should be in his pocket.
