Elections of 68 municipalities in Gujarat this month: BJP won 41, Congress won 14 in last polls

Gandhinagar: Gujarat will be witnessing elections to local bodies like municipalities, corporations, and taluka panchayats. A total of 66 municipalities will be holding regular general elections, while two are going for mid-term elections. In the last polls held in these municipalities, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party emerged victorious in 41 of them, while Congress won in 14 municipalities. There were 4 municipalities that were either won by independents or were hung, while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured victory in one local body.
The 66 municipalities that are going for elections are Bavla, Sanand, Dhandhuka, Mansa, Ahmedabad, Dakor, Chaklasi, Mahudha, Kheda, Anklav, Boriyavi, Ode, Lunawada, Santrampur, Balasinor, Khedbrahma, Prantij, Talod, Harij, Chanasama, Radhanpur, Kheralu, Vadnagar, Karjan, Chhotaudepur, Zalod, Devgadh Baria, Kalol, Halol, Bilimora, Valsad, Pardi, Dharampur, Songadh, Jamjodhpur, Dhrol, Kalavad, Salaya, Dwarka, Bhanvad, Bantva, Manavadar, Mangrol, Visavadar, Vanthali, Chorvad, Kodinar, Rapar, Bhachau, Lathi, Jafrabad, Rajula, Chalala, Shihor, Gaariyadhar, Talaja, Gadhada, Jasdan, Jetpur-Navgadh, Dhoraji, Bhayavadar, Upleta, Halvad, Thangadh, Kutiyana, and Ranavav.
Out of the 66 municipalities that are going for elections this month, 39 were won by BJP in the last polls held in 2018. These municipalities are Bavla, Sanand, Dhandhuka, Mansa, Ahmedabad, Santrampur, Balasinor, Prantij, Harij, Chanasama, Kheralu, Vadnagar, Karjan, Halol, Bilimora, Valsad, Dharampur, Songadh, Jamjodhpur, Dhrol, Kalavad, Dwarka, Bhanvad, Bantva, Kodinar, Rapar, Bhachau, Lathi, Jafrabad, Chalala, Shihor, Talaja, Gadhada, Jasdan, Jetpur-Navgadh, Upleta, Halvad, Thangadh, and Kutiyana.
Meanwhile, the main opposition party clinched victory in 14 municipalities, namely Boriyavi, Ode, Lunawada, Talod, Radhanpur, Devgadh Baria, Salaya, Manavadar, Visavadar, Vanthali, Chorvad, Rajula, Dhoraji, and Bhayavadar.
Four municipalities, namely Dakor, Kheda, Anklav, and Kalol, were won by independent candidates. The NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) also managed to win one municipality, Ranavav. Four municipalities were left hung due to no decided number. These municipalities were Chaklasi, Mahudha, Chhotaudepur, and Zalod. However, in Jhalod, the Congress party was on the halfway mark.
The two municipalities that are going for midterm polls are Botad and Wankaner, which were also won by BJP in the last local polls held in 2021.
The polling that will be held on the 16th of February will also include the Junagadh Municipal Corporation elections. The last elections for the Junagadh Municipal Corporation were held in 2021, in which BJP won 54 seats out of 59, while Congress secured only one seat, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won four seats.
On the other hand, three taluka panchayats are also going for elections: Kathlal, Kapadvanj, and Gandhinagar Taluka Panchayats.
Looking at the previous results of these taluka panchayat polls, in Kapadvanj, out of 26 seats, BJP had 9 seats, Congress had 13 seats, NCP had 2 seats, and Independents had 2 seats. In Kathlal, out of 24 seats, BJP had 12 seats, Congress had 10 seats, and Independents had 2 seats.
