Chandola demolition Phase 2 to be bigger than Phase 1; begins tomorrow

Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to launch Phase 2 of the demolition drive in the Chandola Lake area starting tomorrow. A high-level discussion regarding the operation was held today, with AMC officials and Police Commissioner G.S. Malik present.

Chandola Lake, which has become a hotspot for illegal settlements, especially by Bangladeshi nationals, is now the focus of a large-scale clearance drive. In this phase, approximately 2.5 lakh square metres of encroachments around Chandola Lake will be cleared, following the removal of illegal encroachments from 1.5 lakh square metres of land in Phase 1.

To ensure security and smooth execution of the operation, over 3,000 police personnel and 25 SRP (State Reserve Police) teams will be deployed. Police Commissioner G.S. Malik stated that the police’s primary role is to provide security during the demolition process. Illegal structures, many of which obstruct public roads, will be removed over the course of two to three days.

Authorities also confirmed that AMC has made arrangements to allot housing for those who will be displaced during the demolition.

It is also noteworthy that so far in 2025, 250 Bangladeshi nationals have been apprehended, with 207 of them caught from the Chandola Lake area. Over 200 individuals have already been deported. DeshGujarat
