Ahmedabad: City police on Tuesday detained Gujarat Congress leaders, including Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Chavda, as they attempted to take out a foot march towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Khanpur.

The Congress had organised the padyatra under the slogan “Satyamev Jayate” from Nehru Bridge, following a Delhi court’s decision to decline cognisance of the Enforcement Directorate’s prosecution complaint in the National Herald money-laundering case, a move that provided relief to former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

Led by Amit Chavda, senior Congress leaders and workers began marching from Nehru Bridge towards the BJP office. However, near the Khanpur end of the bridge, police stopped the procession and prevented Chavda, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Leader of Opposition Shahezadkhan Pathan, Congress leader Shahnawaz Sheikh, along with corporators and party workers, from moving ahead.

Police placed a van across the road and detained the Congress leaders and workers. Several party workers were asked to sit inside police vehicles, leading to brief friction between Congress members and the police.

During the march, Congress leaders and workers carried banners with slogans such as “Truth Alone Triumphs,” “Fear-free politics is Congress’s identity,” and “The country will run by the Constitution, not by the misuse of government agencies.” The padyatra was halted before reaching the BJP office in Khanpur, with all participants taken into detention.
