Congress Moves Councillors to Undisclosed Location Amid Defection Fears in Dabhoi Municipality
May 02, 2026
Dabhoi: Despite securing a clear majority in the Dabhoi Municipality, the Congress is facing fears of defections, prompting the party to resort to “resort politics” to safeguard its elected members ahead of the formation of the municipal board.
It is learnt that the party has shifted around 12 of its elected councillors to an undisclosed location outside the town to prevent possible poaching attempts. The move has intensified political activity in the municipality even before the official formation of the board.
The political situation in Dabhoi has heated up following the announcement of the election results. In the 36-member municipality, Congress won 21 seats, securing a clear majority, while the BJP bagged 15 seats.
Typically, a clear majority ensures a smooth path to power formation. However, the current developments suggest underlying concerns within the Congress over potential defections.
Party leaders have reportedly taken this step as a precautionary measure to keep councillors “secure” until the board is formally constituted. The councillors are expected to remain at the undisclosed location until the process of forming the municipal board is completed. DeshGujarat
