Gujarat Leads India’s Renewable Energy Capacity Additions with 4.43 GW in Q2

Gandhinagar: India added around 16.12 GW of renewable energy capacity between April and June 2026, marking a 67.8% year-on-year increase, with Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh accounting for more than half of the total additions.

Gujarat led among the larger states with 4.43 GW of new capacity, followed by Rajasthan with 2.51 GW and Uttar Pradesh with 1.69 GW. Together, the three states accounted for more than 53% of the renewable capacity added during the quarter.

Utility-scale solar was the main driver of new capacity, with Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu recording the highest installations.

According to data compiled by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), overall renewable capacity additions fell by more than 15% quarter-on-quarter in Q2.

Solar remained the dominant source, accounting for 73.8% of total net additions, despite a 17.7% quarter-on-quarter decline from the record commissioning levels in Q1.

Wind capacity additions remained stable at around 1.48 GW per quarter since Q2 2025, while coal capacity additions declined by 4.8% quarter-on-quarter. Gujarat and Maharashtra recorded the highest wind capacity additions.

IEEFA said the expiry of the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charge waiver could encourage developers to locate projects closer to demand centres, potentially leading to a more even distribution of future renewable capacity across states. DeshGujarat
