Ahmedabad: A woman was apprehended at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle a 499.5g gold chain into the country without declaring it or paying customs duty. The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department seized the 24-carat gold chain, valued at Rs 83 lakh.
According to the department, AIU officers intercepted the woman after she arrived in Ahmedabad from Sharjah on Sunday based on passenger profiling. During a search, officers found the gold chain concealed inside her high-neck sweater. The chain weighed 499.5g and was of 24 KT purity.
The passenger was released on bail after the gold chain was seized. Sources said she is a medical professional working in the Gulf and had completed her graduate and postgraduate studies in Gujarat.
“Prima facie, it seems to be a case of wilful non-declaration of the gold article. A probe will reveal more details,” a customs officer said.
