Gujarat Govt Announces Additional Subsidy for Rooftop Solar Systems

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has announced an additional state subsidy for households installing rooftop solar systems of up to 2 kW under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, reducing the beneficiaries’ contribution to just 10% of the benchmark cost for general-category consumers and 5% for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) consumers.

The decision was taken at a state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Wednesday. Announcing the decision, state government spokesperson and minister Jitu Vaghani said the initiative aims to make rooftop solar systems more affordable for poor, middle-class and other households across Gujarat.

Under the revised subsidy structure, the state government will cover the remaining installation cost after deducting the central government’s assistance and the beneficiary’s contribution. More than 3 lakh households are expected to benefit directly from the decision, with the state government estimated to spend around ₹1,000 crore on the additional subsidy.

For a 1 kW rooftop solar system costing ₹54,000, the central government currently provides a subsidy of ₹32,400. Under the revised arrangement, a general-category consumer will pay only ₹5,400, while an SC/ST consumer will contribute ₹2,700. The Gujarat government will cover the remaining ₹16,200 for general-category beneficiaries and ₹18,900 for SC/ST beneficiaries.

Similarly, for a 2 kW rooftop solar system costing ₹1,07,200, the central government provides assistance of ₹62,800. Following the state government’s additional subsidy, general-category consumers will pay ₹10,720, while SC/ST consumers will contribute ₹5,360. The state government will provide a subsidy of ₹33,600 for general-category beneficiaries and ₹38,960 for SC/ST beneficiaries.

Gujarat Leads India in Rooftop Solar Installations

Gujarat has emerged as the leading state in the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of expanding access to rooftop solar power.

According to the state government, more than 14 lakh households across Gujarat have installed rooftop solar systems. Of these, over 8.5 lakh households have adopted rooftop solar under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, placing Gujarat first in the country under the initiative.

The programme is helping households reduce their electricity bills, with some families generating surplus power that can provide an additional source of income.

Vaghani said the state government, under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s leadership, remains committed to improving household welfare and expanding the use of environmentally friendly, renewable energy across Gujarat.
