Ahmedabad Court Sentences Man to 8 Years in Jail for Selling Beef

Ahmedabad: A sessions court in Ahmedabad has sentenced Qayum Qureshi to eight years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him ₹2 lakh for possessing and selling beef. The court acquitted co-accused Asif Shaikh alias Badshah, citing insufficient evidence to establish his alleged role as a supplier.

The case dates back to May 5, 2020, when Isanpur police raided a shop at Faisal Park near Chandola Lake and caught Qureshi allegedly selling beef without a licence or legal authorisation. Police seized 65 kg of meat worth ₹10,400, along with knives, cutting tools, weighing scales and other articles. Forensic analysis confirmed that the meat was derived from cow progeny. Badshah was booked for allegedly supplying the meat to Qureshi.

Both accused were charged under the Gujarat Animal Preservation Act, 2017, in connection with cow slaughter and beef possession. The court acquitted Qureshi of the slaughter-related charges but convicted him of possessing and selling beef based on forensic findings and other evidence.

Sessions Judge S R Sangani rejected probation for Qureshi, describing the offence as anti-social in nature and observing that it was committed deliberately for financial gain. DeshGujarat
