Consult CMs on national approach on climate change:Modi to PM
Gandhinagar, 7 December, 2010
Gujarat Chief Minister shree Narendra Modi urged The Prime Minister Dr. Man Mohan Singh to involve The Chief Ministers of all states for defining India’s national commitments for Climate Change, before they are submitted by government of India for international negotiations.
In a letter to PM, Quoting current reports about the stand taken by GOI, at COP-16 Summit on climate change at Cancun-Mexico, on Measurement, Reporting, verification, international consultations and Analysis (MRV/KA) of India’s domestic climate Actions, which is contrary to the earlier commitment of GOI assured to Indian parliament, Gujarat Chief Minister Categorically said that this is not only a compromise with respect of national sovereignty but also raises a serious issue regarding Federal structure of India. About 70 to 80 PC of Mitigation and adaptation work on climate change are being done at state level, but so far no mechanism had been put in place to involve Chief Minister of state Governments in a consultative process before deciding on India’s National Approach on Climate Change. This is contrary to the true spirit of Indian Federal system, he said.
