Finally after long bureaucratic delays of around four years the Gujarat Police soon will switch over to smart phone like small digital new wireless communication devices instead of age old VHF wireless devises. It’s in the final stage of adopting Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) Digital Radio Trunking system Wireless Communication Network for police communication. Trial run is likely to start from February-March 2015.
TETRA will be implemented in four Police Commissionerates & Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara & Gandhinagar district police jurisdiction.
New light weight walkie‐talkie (digital trunk radio handhelds) will have built‐in GPS, having battery life of minimum 8 hours. The system/hand held will enable police to not only communicate securely but also enable them to select the listener either as one to one basis or for select group of users or broadcast.
TETRA will also enable police to to send messages/images along with the position and time stamp of the network‐ that cannot be tampered.
The project for five major cities of the state is expected to be around Rs.400 crore. At present Delhi, Hyderabad and few major cities have switched over to TETRA system.
