For the first time, a broad gauge goods train today arrived at Bairabi Railway Station in Mizoram from Guwahati carrying 2,600 metric tonnes of rice.
Mizoram Transport Minister John Rotluangliana, who received the train, said the arrival of the “large train” was a significant milestone in the history of Mizoram.
The operation of larger trains at the Bairabi Station on the Mizoram-Assam border would ensure that people could purchase commodities at lower prices while produces of the state could also be transported outside at cheaper rates.
While the National Highway 54 linking Aizawl with the rest of the country via Silchar in Assam has been the only lifeline for Mizoram, operation of goods train from Assam to Bairabi is expected to provide an alternative root, an official statement said.
