DySp Bhatt’s statement on Sanand farmers rally incident

Ahmedabad: DySP of Sanand Mr. Bhatt has today issued official statement on violence that took place at farmers rally in Sanand today:

Villagers of Nalkantha area had sought permission to hold a tractor rally from Upardal village to Gandhinagar for availability of sufficient water from canal for irrigation purpose. The permission was not granted as it was not found suitable, considering the situation of law and order.

Even after denial of permission, the villagers from villages around Upardal gathered in around 30-40 tractors and started moving from Upardal toward Gandhinagar in strength of around 2,000-2,500. Attempts were made to convince them(to drop the march for which permission was not granted) but their leaders were firm to go ahead in rally. Meanwhile enough police bandobast was deployed and executive magistrate Sanand and police superintendent Ahmedabad rural were also part of it.

At around 12.15 pm when rally crossed Mankol chokdi, stone pelting started targeting police men suddenly, due to which superintendent of police Ahmedabad rural suffered serious head injury. Stone pelting was continuing even after this. Police had to lob 38 tear gas shells but mob was still out of control. After taking necessary approval, force was used to control the crowd and those found pelting stones were rounded up from the mob. Later the mob disbursed. Six cops were injured in this incident and situation is in control. Police bandobast has been deployed.

On complaint of V.D.Zala, police sub inspector of Sanand GIDC police station, offense 18/17 under epc section 307, 323, 325, 326, 332, 333, 147, 148, 149, 427, 188, damage to public property act section 3(7) and GP act section 135 has been filed against the accused. The case is being probed by in charge police inspector of Sanand police station Mr. B.H.Vyas.
