Gandhinagar, 22 March, 2012
On World Water Day, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in his blog appealed the citizens to conserve water to give the future generations their right.
He said, “Gujarat has taken numerous initiatives for water conservation and management and now we are reaping the benefits of our efforts. Augmenting water, conserving it, storing it and using it judicially has been the mantra for Gujarat’s phenomenal growth in this decade.”
Shri Modi in his blog said, “Water is God’s gift. Today we have water because our ancestors conserved water. Would we have enough water today, if they had not been considerate? What is our duty towards future generations?”
Shri Modi further asked, ” Do human beings have exclusive right over water or does it belong to the entire existence? On this World Water Day, if we ask ourselves these questions, then we will not only get answers but also the right direction to move forward.”
Shri Modi pointed out that water crisis was not there two hundred years earlier. The human population was also less. Despite these, our ancestors were highly aware of the need for water conservation. The best example of this is Gandhiji’s house in Porbandar which is more than two hundred years old with an underground tank to collect rainwater.
Modi appealed to visit Kirti Mandir in Porbandar, see the water management system built by ancestors without fail.
