It seems, any talk on development of any of the states of India can never be complete without mentioning Gujarat. Look at this part of Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan’s interview published in the Economic Times today. The Chief Minister defends Maharashtra with figures of FDI. At the same time he admits that Gujarat has led Maharashtra in port development. The point is, one has to compare one’s state with Gujarat to assess the success achieved on the development front. So Gujarat has become a benchmark of development. An excerpt of Prithviraj Chavan’s interview regarding Gujarat is pasted below.
There is also a perception that Maharashtra is lagging behind states such as Gujarat in attracting big investments.
That is clearly not the case. If you look at the total FDI coming into Maharashtra, it is almost twice that of Gujarat. Also, if you look at the completion of MoUs that we have signed, we are way ahead of many states.
That is not to say that there is no competition. Definitely, Gujarat has led us in port development. They have a longer coastline. Some of the investments that have come to Gujarat are because of the port access, particularly from the export-oriented auto industry.
But auto majors like Volkswagen, Mercedes and Skoda have come to Maharashtra. Only recently, we wanted Maruti to come in, but they went to Gujarat because they wanted to locate the facility near the Mundra port. Maharashtra is seeing a major investment boom in the IT sector.
