Gujarat government seizes Essar’s four bank accounts

Ahmedabad, 9 July 2012

The Gujarat government today seized four bank accounts of Essar Oil Ltd, for recovery of Rs 8,200 crore sales tax dues.

The Gujarat high court last month rejected the company’s writ petition seeking a direction on repayment of sales tax on 25 June and directed the state to expedite the recovery process.

Reacting to the latest move by state government, Essar Oil in a media statement said it was surprised and disappointed by the Gujarat government’s unexpected step of attaching its bank accounts despite the company clearly stating its intent to pay the sales tax due to the state.
