The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) may supply round-the-clock water to citizens in near future.
Presently in the country, Nagpur, Chandigadh and other cities provide such service to the citizens. Senior officials of these cities today attended a seminar in Ahmedabad, hosted by the AMC, and shared their knowledge on 24-hour metered water supply.
According to Ahmedabad Mayor Asit Vora, the AMC intends to start 24X7 water supply initially in city’s Jodhpur ward as a pilot project. According to Vora, in later stage, whole city will be covered under the scheme.
According to AMC’s presentation in the workshop, per connection tentative expense for metered 24×7 water supply scheme is estimated at Rs 12,500.
The city has 1111717 residential, 33352 commercial and 2039 public tap water connections, thus total 1147101 connections.
In past few years, Ahmedabad has reduced the use of bore wells gradually from 532 to 90 at present, thanks to maximum use of surface water. This has helped in saving Rs 15 crores per year energy expenses. The city targets to stop all bore wells by 2014.
