Ahmedabad, 19 September 2013
Ahmedabad’s Kalupur railway station is now equipped with a two-way escalator. The inauguration of Rs. 1.44 crore two-way escalator took place today morning.
As per an estimate, daily 1.30 lakh passengers visit the Ahmedabad railway station. 30% of them are senior citizens. The escalator opened today has capacity to carry 9,000 passengers per hour. The entire task of installation of this escalator has been completed within four months. Railway board has approved two escalators at Gandhidham railway station and one at Bhuj railway station so far as Ahmedabad division is concerned.
Isn’t it a matter of surprise that even in the 13th year of 21st century, this is the first escalator at any railway station in Gujarat? If you go to Delhi, there are plenty of metro stations where escalators are installed. Then there’s a question that for how long the escalators at Ahmedabad railway station will continue to function! We have very bad experience at nearby Ahmedabad airport where travellator connecting domestic and international terminals has never functioned after its inauguration.
