The Gujarat government has started laying 9 km long underground cable in Siravandh-Amarapar belt of Khadir area in Kutch district.
Existing high-tension overhead power lines, of 120 volts and 11 kilo volts occasionally cause accidental deaths of flamingo and other birds that are found at nearby breeding colony in Rann of Kutch in large number. These power lines cross the island to provide electricity to 16 villages. Flamingo and other birds die due to accident with overhead cable during flight in dark.
The government took decision to shift overhead cables to underground location to prevent further deaths of birds. Two years back the Forest department had reported deaths of 139 flamingo birds during breeding season.
