In pictures/Video: Ahmedabad police use force to detain Congress workers doing protest, blocking traffic

‘We disagree with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s latest property tax formula and therefore we will protest at major cross roads of Ahmedabad blocking the vehicular traffic.’

Well that’s Ahmedabad Congress’s stand for last few days.

First they protested and blocked traffic at Paldi cross roads and today they did same at Vadaj circle.

Police had to use force to resume the traffic.

One of the photos above features leader of opposition in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Shri Badruddinbhai Sheikh who claimed he faced external injury due to police lathicharge. Sheikh was treated at V.S hospital.

The city unit of Congress party is protesting against ‘Jantri’ based property tax formula implemented in Ahmedabad by BJP ruled civic body. Due to Jantri based property tax formula, those areas where valuation of land is higher have to pay more property tax and those areas where valuation of land is not so high pay lesser tax.

There are two types of agitations going on against this formula. While one agitation has been started by a group of common people of Jodhpur/satellite area of city, the other agitation has been launched by Congress party’s city unit.

The original agitation has not expanded outside the limits of Jodhpur area, and it is going down from peak period when the area observed bandh.

The second agitation by city Congress is limited to few protests on roads. Only Congress workers are largely seen participating in these protests.

The situation for BJP ruled AMC is therefore not alarming, and therefore they are taking time in reviewing the formula.

AMC bosses are actually not convinced that their tax proposal is faulty. They may or may not reverse the decision, fully or partially in next few days.
