15 ft tall statue of Mahatma Gandhi arrives at Dandi for Memorial Project

A 15 ft tall statue of Mahatma Gandhi was brought to Dandi town in south Gujarat today from Mumbai. The statue has been presently put in Vinajy Mandir complex in Dandi.

A simple ceremony was organized on arrival of Gandhi’s statue in Dandi. School children catered Gandhi songs and village leader Dhirubhai welcomed the guests in a brief speech.

Gandhiji’s this statue has been made by Sadashiv Sathe, whose son Shrirang was present during arrival of Gandhi statue in Dandi. It is 15 ft tall and made at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh. Its weight is about 3 tonne. It has been made using panch dhatu for sustained survival on sea shore. IIT Mumbai had taken help of international design team for making of this statue.

The statue will be placed as core part of Dandi memorial project, with pyramid of light and light house. It will be placed in a style that will visualize Gandhiji’s arms in sky and particles of salt in his hand.

A 35-meter tall memorial will be powered by solar panels. IIT’s Mr. Kulkarni, R&B’s Deputy Engineer Kher, Gandhi Heritage Site Mission’s Kamleshbhai are part of this project.
