A South Korean team carried out a study on the feasibility of increasing train speed from the current 130 km per hour to 200 kmph on the Delhi-Mumbai route.

Led by Jeo ll Song of Korea Rail Road Network Authority, a state-run rail road construction giant, the team of South Korean Rail Road officials have been carrying out a survey on the Delhi-Palwal section of the route to devise methods to increase it’s speed potential.

The team is expected to submit its report within six months.

The aim of the plan is to reduce the travelling time between Delhi and Mumbai by increasing train speed, said a senior Northern Railway official.

Officials of RITES and Delhi Division accompanied the team to familiarise them with the intricacies of maintenance and operation here.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in his maiden Rail Budget speech had said that the speed of nine railway corridors will be increased from the existing 110 and 130 km per hour to 160 and 200 kmph, respectively, so that inter-metro journeys like Delhi-Kolkata and Delhi-Mumbai can be completed overnight.

The Korean team interacted with Railways’ Delhi Division officials to understand the present track, signalling and overhead line infrastructure and the efforts made in the past for increasing the speed potential.
