A coin-shaped battery, which remained stuck in the food pipe of a two-year-old boy for more than a month, was surgically removed, a city-based surgeon said here today.
“We have successfully removed a coin-shaped battery cell, which was the size of a 50-paise coin, from the foodpipe of a two-year-old boy,” doctor Himanshu Thakkar, a city-based surgeon who treated the boy told PTI.
Two-year-old Harsh Kalpesh Siddhpura, a native of Ghoghavadar town of Rajkot district, suffered severe cough and fever since a month and was unable to drink even the water, Thakkar said.
“We were shocked, when an X-Ray report (of the boy) revealed a coin-shaped metal stuck in the patient’s foodpipe,” the surgeon said.
“The coin cell battery was stuck at the top of the boy’s food pipe, due to which he could not eat or drink. It was surgically removed on Monday,” he said.
“The boy was kept under observation after the surgery and today he was discharged from my hospital,” he said.
The surgeon said that the incident was bizzare and could have killed the boy because the battery released fatal acids.
“Luckily, other organs of the boy were not affected and he is completely fine” he said.
“The oesophagoscopy surgery was most challenging, considering the child’s age and the foreign body, which was stuck on the upper part of foodpipe,” Thakkar said, adding that the procedure was done without any complication.
