Sensing victory, scores of ABVP youths had begun dancing to drumbeats and distributed sweets and burst crackers as the Delhi University Students’ Union poll results were being announced.
Once the final results were announced, all the four winners, DUSU president, Satender Awana, vice president, Sunny Dedha, secretary, Anjali Rana, and joint secretary, Chhattarpal Yadav were garlanded and taken out on the shoulders of the supporters from the counting venue in the varsity.
A victory procession on a convoy of cars was taken led by the winners seated atop a jeep was taken out to the Swami Vivekanand statue at University Plaza where ABVP Delhi secretary Saket Bahuguna announced ABVP’s victory.
“It’s a victory of ABVP organisation as well as ideology of nationalism. Victory of our candidates has been ensured by our year long struggle on students related issues on the campus and also because of our strong organisation having dedicated workers,” he said.
Sunny Dedha, the vice president of DUSU said, “It’s a victory of ABVP volunteers who worked hard during campaigning.
We will now focus on various issues and schemes for students and work on them for a better campus environment.
Anjali Rana who was overwhelmed by her victory too expressed similar sentiments promising to work for security of girl students of DU.
Chhattarpal Yadav, who won the Joint Secretary post said, “Our victory is a message for those who appeared on campus during the elections only while we worked continuously in the interests of students.”
DU students expressed mixed views on the victory of ABVP saying that they will look towards their performance as DUSU office bearers.
Richa Soni, a second year student of Swami Shraddhanand College, credited the success of ABVP to the efforts of the students who supported the party throughout the year.
“This win is a result of the collective efforts of all students who supported and worked for the ABVP. We were divided in groups of 50 and we toiled hard throughout the year to remain among the students and raise their grievances,” said Soni as she marched parallel to the open jeep, the winning candidates were travelling in.
The spectacular victory of ABVP which has registered win in the DUSU elections for the second year in a row has given a ray of hope to some but then there were others who were a bit disappointed as they feared that the party would soon be implementing CBCS.
“CBCS is a new concept and there isn’t enough clarity on the issue. Since ABVP has regained the power. I expect early implementation of CBCS from them as per their pre-polls promise,” said Prateek, a first year student of Ramjas college.
On the contrary, Vineet, a first year student of Ramjas College voiced his disagreement over CBCS saying, “I am not in favour of the CBCS. Given the fact that ABVP has retained power in this year’s DUSU election, I am afraid they may be trying to implement it soon,” said Vineet, also a first year student of Ramjas College.
Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) remained a contentious issue throughout the polls and had caused a demarcation within the student’s community resulting in parties making different promises.
There are many students who have been demanding a rollback of CBCS while there are others who want its implementation.
