Ground breaking for construction of a new river bridge over Narmada in Bharuch district of central Gujarat will take place tomorrow by state Chief Minister.
The four lane bridge will come up next to existing over 100 years old Golden bridge which connects the city of Bharuch to Ankleshwar.
The new bridge will be on national highway number 8 at the stretch between 193/8 and 195/2 km.
The bridge will have 850 meter length on Bharuch side including 20 meter solid approach and 640 meter wide portion. The bridge will have 1700 meter portion on Surat side including approach road.
The bridge according to details shared by the state government will be built in next 30 months at estimated cost of Rs 309.10 crore by Road and Building department, Government of Gujarat.
There are two bridges including Golden bridge and railway bridge over river Narmada in Bharuch. The Golden bridge was constructed in year 1882 under British rule. it’s an old and narrow bridge which can carry two vehicles side by side at one time. For last 20 years, heavy vehicles are banned to use this bridge. They therefore need to cross new national highway to reach Ankleshwar. Sardar bridge located on new national highway remains close for vehicles often for repairing which triggers massive traffic jam for hours. The new four lane bridge will solve this problem and make road journey between Surat and Vadodara smoother and speedier.
