A group of young people chanting ‘Jay Shri Ram’ slogans – some of them with saffron scarfs today protested Hindi film actor Shah Rukh Khan’s presence in Kutch district of Gujarat. Shah Rukh’s posters were beaten with shoes and even burnt by these youths who were apparently from Vishwa Hindu Parishad.
The youths said they were protesting against Shah Rukh Khan for his remarks projecting India as an intolerant nation.
Gujarat VHP leader Ranchhodbhai Bharwad when asked told media persons over phone that the protest was held by VHP.
Shah Rukh Khan is in Kutch for a week-long shooting of his upcoming film Raees which is based on life of Ahmedabad based mafia of late 1980s Abdul Latif’s life. The film is being made by St. Xavier’s alumni Rahul Dholakia who earlier made controversial film Perzania based on communal riots. Pakistani heroine Mahira Khan is lead actress in this film.
The protesters in Bhuj staged protest opposite the district collector office with Shah Rukh’s posters and banners and submitted memorandum demanding cancellation of permission to shoot the movie in Kutch.
It is learnt that security has been increased around the Regenta hotel in Bhuj where Shah Rukh has stayed in Kutch and around the locations of shooting that are in Ghadhshisha area and white Rann of Kutch.
