Putting the administration in tizzy, 8 youths belonging to Gujarat Gauraksha Ekta Samiti today consumed poison together inside the collector office here amid police deployment protesting against non-acceptance of their demand to declare cow as ‘Rashtramata’ (mother of the nation) within the period of their ultimatum. One of those 8 has been dead, following which strike call has been given in Rajkot city tomorrow.
After the incident supporters of the less know outfit and commoners blocked roads at several places in Rajkot and other parts of Saurashtra including Junagarh.
Police has also detained 18 members of the outfit near Greenland crossing in the city to remove blockade.
ACP Kalpesh Chavda said that over 50 protesters entered the collector office premises at around 1215 pm today and started slogan shouting. Before anybody could guess anything eight of them Kamlesh Rabari (29, resident of Morbi), Dinesh Loriya (42, Morbi), Amar Danidhariya (27, Gondal-Rajkot), Raghuvirsinh Jadeja (27, Khiri-Jamnagar), Valabhia Maru (36, Thangarh), Vijay Singhav (28, Limbadi), Hindabhai Vambhadiya (35, Jasdan) and Dipak Vaghela (30, Jasdan) consumed poison (a pesticide used for cotton crops).
They have been admitted to the civil hospital for treatment by the 108 ambulance which was already on the spot as a precautionary measure
in the wake of their ultimatum.
The outfit had held a rally here in support of their demand for which another organization Akhil Vishwa Gaukranti Gausamvardhan Manch is organizing a fast in the national capital. The Gujarat outfit members had given an ultimatum of ‘sacrifice’ to the district collector Ms Manisha Chandra in a memorandum handed over yesterday. They had threatened to sacrifice their lives if their demand to declare the cow Rashtramata and complete ban on sail of beef was not met within 24 hours.
Meanwhile crowd jammed Gondal road crossing, Madhapar crossing and some other roads in the city and other parts of saurashtra after the incident. In Junagarh people blocked Madhuarm bypass road.
