The police in Gujarat, a state on the target of terror elements, is facing substantial shortage of modern weaponry with a shortage of around 36%, the CAG report tabled in the state assembly on the last day of the budget session today said.
The police should have 6704 AK-47 rifles but is having only 1605, a shortage of over 75 %, the report mentioned.
The number of 9 mm carbines with the state police force was also only 5827 as against a standard requirement of 11015. The shot guns were also little numbered at 2743 as against the requirement of 8396, the report noted.
It said that though the overall shortage of modern weapons in the police force has come down from around 60 % in 2009 to around 36 % by March 31, 2015, it was still well below the standard requirement.
