U.S. Consulate Inaugurates “American Corner” in Ahmedabad

Mumbai: The U.S. Consulate General Mumbai, in partnership with the Indo-American Education Society (IAES), opened the doors to its remodeled American Corner in Ahmedabad today. The American Corner serves as a one-stop shop for current and reliable information about the United States through a wide collection of books, DVDs, and online resources.

“The American Corner is a window on life and culture in the United States,” said the U.S. Consulate Mumbai’s Cultural Affairs Officer James Fennell. “We are proud of the long-standing educational and cultural partnership between the United States and India, including our tradition of academic exchange. The inauguration of the American Corner in Ahmedabad will further strengthen people-to-people ties, providing the people of Ahmedabad with additional resources to learn about educational and other opportunities in the United States, improve their English language skills, and to deepen their understanding of the U.S. society, culture, and economy.”

The American Corner includes a space for self-study and small group work, a language lab, and modern computer facilities. It can accommodate a 50-person audience for in-house programs on themes important to India and the United States such as education, English language, bilateral relations, environment, women’s empowerment, and entrepreneurship. In addition, it boasts a collection of 400+ books and DVDs, three computers with free access to Internet, and e-resources, including 40 remotely accessible databases. The American Corner also houses collections on topics related to bilateral interests, including economics, management, business, American studies, literature, English teaching, English language, Education, Politics, Law, and Democratic societies.

The American Corner is open to the public from 10.30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily (Monday-Saturday). Any adult resident of Ahmedabad (16 years and above) can obtain American Corner’s annual membership by presenting appropriate identification documents with a photograph.
