Amul milk price up by Rs 2 per litre from Saturday

Ahmedabad: Amul milk will be dearer by Rs 2 per litre from tomorrow across all varients in Gujarat. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) has decided to increase the milk prices by 4 per cent or Rs. 2 per litre for its consumers across India. GCMMF, which sells milk and milk products under the brand name Amul, had earlier increased prices of dairy products including cheese, butter, ghee and other products.

Amul milk is sold in six variants and the price hike will be made effective in all of them. The latest price hike comes after a similar hike of Rs. 2 made in June 2016 for Delhi and Gujarat markets.

Amul has increased milk prices at least 22 times since 2006.

Justifying the price rise of Amul milk, the Managing Director of GCMMF R S Sodhi said the cost of cattle feed has gone up by 25 %, while the cost of green fodder has gone up by 20 to 25 %. We have no other way of compensating the member-farmers than raising the price, Sodhi added.

Sodhi said GCMMF’s member dairy unions are paying anywhere between Rs 610 to Rs 635 per kg fat to their farmer members. “Since May 2014, prices of all dairy products except milk had remained stagnant.

In June 2016, Amul had last hiked milk prices by Rs 2 per litre across the country.
