Amul Hikes Ghee, Butter Prices Ahead of Diwali

Anand: Amul has raised prices of ghee and butter ahead of Diwali, adding to consumers’ festive expenses, while retailers across Gujarat report persistent shortages of popular dairy products, particularly cow ghee.

According to revised maximum retail prices (MRPs), a 1-kg carton of Amul ghee now costs Rs 680, up from Rs 630, while a 500-gm pouch of pure ghee has become costlier, rising from Rs 325 to Rs 345. Butter prices have also increased, with the 100-gm pack now priced at Rs 66, against Rs 63 earlier, and the 500-gm pack costing Rs 325, up from Rs 310.

The price hike comes amid a sharp increase in demand for branded ghee following a crackdown on adulterated products in Gujarat and Rajasthan. A cooperative leader associated with Amul said nearly 2 lakh kg of counterfeit ghee had been seized across the two states over the past six months, prompting consumers to shift towards trusted brands.

The festive season has further strained supplies, with nearly 45% of annual ghee consumption typically taking place during this period.

The latest price revision also offsets much of the benefit of the GST reduction in September 2025, when the tax on dairy products was cut from 12% to 5%. Amul had subsequently reduced prices across 700 dairy products, including ghee and butter. DeshGujarat
