New Delhi: Four GST enabling Bills, which will pave the way for the implementation of the GST regime from July 1, 2017, today got the approval of Parliament with the Rajya Sabha passing them by voice vote and returning them to the Lok Sabha.
The four GST enabling Bills – the the Central Goods and Services Tax Bill (CGST), the Integrated Goods and Services Tax Bill (IGST) the Goods and Services Tax (Compensation to States) Bill and the Union Territory Goods and Services Tax Bill (UTGST) – were returned by the Rajya Sabha after rejecting the amendments moved by Mr Derek O’Brien of the All India Trinamool Congress and Tapan Kumar Sen and T K Rangarajan of the CPI-M.
In keeping with the spirit of consensus on the Bill, the Congress did not move its amendments to the Bills.
The four GST-related bills were passed after a marathon discussion in the Upper House, which began yesterday.
The Lok Sabha has already passed these bills.
