Gujarat Polls: Muslim leaders of Gujarat Congress meet in Gandhinagar
April 09, 2017
Gandhinagar: A meeting of around 100 Muslims who belong to Congress party was held at Islamic Culture Center in capital Gandhinagar. The meeting was attended by Kadir Pirzada, MLA Gyasuddin Sheikh, MLA Javed Pirzada, Mohammad Baloch, Mohammad Fansiwala, Badruddin Sheikh, Vazirkhan Pathan, Murtazakhan Pathan, Iqbal Sheikh among others.
The Muslims in this meeting opined that Gujarat has around 65 lakh Muslims which comes to 11% of Gujarat’s population. The Congress leadership must give enough tickets to Muslims and make sure their effective representation in the assembly. Muslims candidates who can win should not be ignored while selecting candidates.
It should be mentioned here that ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) has refrained from giving ticket to even a single Muslim candidate in all past assembly elections in Gujarat. Congress however regularly gives handful of tickets (less than half dozen) to Muslims, generally from Kutch district, Bharuch district, Ahmedabad city and Wankaner town areas.
