ECI postpones Rajya Sabha election, new dates to be announced later

Gandhinagar: The Election Commission of India(ECI) has postponed the programme of Rajya Sabha election.

The election for three seats of Rajya Sabha in Gujarat therefore will not be held as per the schedule announced earlier as per which the last date of filing nominations was May 29 and polling if needed was to take place on June 8.

The Election Commission in a statement issued today said: ‘The commission has decided to withdraw pres note dated 16th May, 2017. The commission will announce programme for holding Biennial Election to Council of States from Goa, Gujarat and West Bengal in due course. The statement was issued by Director Dhirendra Ojha.’

It’s worth noting here that six years ago, election for same three seats of Gujarat was declared in later part of June and polling took place in later part of July. This time, the ECI declared polling as early as in later part of May and polling if needed in the second week of June.

Six-year tenure of three sitting members of Rajya Sabha Shri Ahmed Patel, Smt Smriti Irani and Shri Dilip Pandya is going to end in the month of August this year.
