Kandla Port renamed as Deendayal Port
September 25, 2017
Gandhidham: India’s leading major port Kandla Port Trust has been formally renamed as Deendayal Port Trust. An official letter in this regard is issued by Joint Secretary, Government of India.
Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay was one of the most important leaders of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the forerunner of the present day Bharatiya Janata Party.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had during his visit to Kandla early this year proposed Kandla Port to be renamed as Deendayal Port in his speech.
A group of leading local persons in Kutch district had however protested this proposal arguing that Pandit Deendayal had no relation to Kandla Port Trust. They had demanded Kandla Port Trust should instead be renamed after local ruler who conceived this port.
