April 23, 2018
New Delhi:In a blow to the opposition parties, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday rejected the impeachment motion moved by seven opposition parties, including the Congress.
The Vice President’s order can be found here in full text.
“This act of members (opposition) of discussing the conduct of the CJI in the press is against propriety and parliamentary decorum as it denigrates the institution of CJI” , Mr Naidu said in a statement.
The decision was taken after “due consultation” during the weekend. The Vice-President has reportedly consulted Attorney General KK Venugopal and other senior advocates.
Charges have been made on suspicion and assumption. Allegations seriously undermine the independence of the judiciary. None of the five allegations in the notice were tenable or admissible, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu observed in his response.
