PM Modi to dedicate Salt March Satyagrah Memorial at Dandi in South Gujarat on January 30th

Surat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will during his visit to Gujarat on January 30th inaugurate National Salt Satyagrahan Memorial at coastal place Dandi in South Gujarat.

The memorial is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi’s salt march of year 1930s against imposition of tax on salt by then British government. Mahatma Gandhi had started Dandi march on 12 March 1930 from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and concluded it on 6 April 1930 at coastal place Dandi in South Gujarat.

80 pad yatris who walked along with Mahatma Gandhi in Dandi March will be represented in the memorial through their full size statues. A 100-ft high ‘Jyot’ has also been erected as focal point of memorial. It will be in lit condition round the clock. A 5 lakh litre water body and 4 lakh litre underground water storage tank are also constructed at memorial site. Solar trees will be another attraction for visitors to Dandi Memorial.

The design of this Rs. 150 crore memorial has been made by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai.

PM Modi is scheduled to be in Surat in South Gujarat to inaugurate international stadium and commence diamond city’s first international flight to Sharjah. 30th January is death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Shri Modi will therefore inaugurate the memorial dedicated to historical event of salt march of year 1930s on this day.
