Gujarat govt tweaks academic schedule for schools; Academic year to start soon after annual exams

Gandhinagar: The Government of Gujarat has made announcement to start new academic year in schools from 20th April 2020 instead of June first week. With this decision, the students will need to go to school for 13 days after annual exam, followed by summer vacation. At present, the schools observe summer vacation immediately after annual exams. But in tweaked time-table they will need to go to school for 13 days after annual exam and then there shall be summer vacation. During these 13 days, the next academic year will start.
– Annual exams and results by 20th April
– Start of new academic year on 20th April
– Schools will remain open till 3rd May
– Summer vacation during 4 May to 7 June (35 days)
– New academic year will resume from June 8
– Academic year will continue till September for 174 days including 61 holidays and 113 working days
– First term-end exams will be conducted from 1st October
– New term will start from 12 October and will continue till 11 November
– 21-day Diwali vacation during 12 November to 2 December
– Second term to start from 3rd December and will continue till 14 March 2021 – in total 166 days including 49 holidays and 117 working days
– Term end exams during 15 March to 31st March
– Second term to over on 31st May
– This system will be effective in primary, secondary and higher secondary schools under Gujarat Board
– This year due to start of term on 20 April, the new academic year will see addition of 12 days
– However from 2021-22, barring Sundays, there will be addition of 24 days in academic year
– Board exam in next year will be conducted in the month of February
– The government will need to plan for early availability of text books (before April 20)
– The new time-table has been in match with CBSE (Central Board of School Education)
– over 45,000 government, grant-in-aid and self financed primary and secondary schools affiliated to the state board to be impacted.
– The decision will replace the June-May session with an April-March one.
– The Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, stipulates a minimum of 200 teaching days for Classes from I till V and 220 days for Classes from VI till VIII. Meanwhile, the Gujarat Secondary Education Regulations, 1974, state that the teaching days should not be less than 240.
