Gujarat govt mulling to set up scrap-parks for 20-year old vehicles

Gandhinagar: The State government is planning to develop a dedicated scrap-parks in Alang and Kutch in Gujarat for the scrapped vehicles after implementation of Central Government’s Vehicle Scrappage Policy.

As per the Vehicle Scrappage Policy of Central Government, to be implemented from 1st October 2021, commercial vehicles older than 15 years and passenger vehicles older than more than 20 years will have to be mandatorily scrapped if they do not pass the fitness and emission test. Developing scarp-parks in Gujarat will create more employment opportunities for the locals. The scrapped vehicles from the overall country may arrive in Gujarat. Basic facilities needed for the scarp park are already available at both these coastal sites.

Scrap Policy aims to replace old vehicles from Indian Roads to reduce pollution, create job opportunities and boost demand for new vehicles. Countries such as the US, Canada, China and Germany have implemented the vehicle scrappage policy with the aim of boosting the automotive industry and checking vehicle pollution.

It is estimated that there are around 2.14 crore vehicles in India which are older than 20 years and the highest of them are in Karnataka. The Government of Gujarat will also declare the scrap policy for the state on the basis of the central government’s vehicle scrappage policy. The vintage cars will not be included in the vehicle scrap policy.
