Supreme Court disposes off ten petitions pertaining to 2002 Gujarat riot cases

New Delhi: A 3-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India UU Lalit, Justices S Ravindra Bhat and JB Pardiwala of the Supreme Court today disposed of ten pleas in the cases of 2002 Gujarat riots. The Apex Court noted that trials in eight out of nine cases are over and the cases are at the appellate stage in higher courts. The bench noted that Advocates of the petitioners had fairly accepted the statement of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Supreme Court. The cases disposed off today include the transfer petitions filed by National Human Right Commission, special leave petitions filed by riot victims and the writ petition filed by Teesta Setalvad led foreign funded NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace during 2003-2004, demanding transfer of investigation from Gujarat police to CBI in riot cases.
