BIS and Centre to form SOP for Ship Plate Usage

Alang: The delegation of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and senior officials from various ministries of the central government have decided to form a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the use of plates from ships after their two-day visit to Alang and Sihor.

This decision comes after BIS implemented a ban on the production of rods in re-rolling mills using plates extracted from ships arriving at the Alang ship recycling yard as raw material. In response, the central government formed a committee, led by Union Cabinet Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, to encourage the ship recycling industry in Alang and address its issues.

As per the committee’s recommendation, the 2.5% customs duty was immediately removed from the ship recycling industry. The committee then sent the delegation to Sihor and Alang to decide on the ban on ship plates. During the two-day visit, the delegation observed the ship recycling process in Alang and visited re-rolling mills in Sihor.

After careful consideration, the delegation has decided to create an SOP for the use of ship plates as raw materials in re-rolling mills. DeshGujarat
