Stone pelting in Chandkheda over removal of Ambedkar statue
April 12, 2023
Ahmedabad: A stone pelting incident broke out in the Chandkheda here on Sunday after the removal of a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar.
On March 30, a shopkeeper named Dilip Tiwari broke a pillar that was meant to hold the Ambedkar statue citing that the site was located on a residential society’s land and constituted an encroachment. Despite several rounds of negotiations with a local social worker Ketul Kapadia, the pillar was not removed. Subsequently, Tiwari damaged the pillar, after which Kapadia allegedly circulated a video on social media, leading to hundreds of people gathering and causing damage to Tiwari’s shop.
Chandkheda police registered a complaint against one Ketul Kapadia for unlawful assembly, causing damage, and rioting. Kapadia was subsequently arrested and sent to judicial custody.DeshGujarat
