Junagadh Police book one for provocative social media post inciting communal tension

Junagadh: The Junagadh B Division Police booked an individual named Sama Sarfaraz on Wednesday for posting provocative content on Facebook, with the aim of inciting communal tension and spreading hatred. The posts went viral after riots erupted in Junagadh due to concerns over the demolition of a religious structure.

The riots were triggered earlier this week when a demolition notice was issued to the Majewadi gate Dargah in Junagadh. The violence resulted in one fatality and several injuries, including those of policemen. Over 500 individuals have been charged with rioting, and 35 have been arrested.

According to the police, Sarfaraz allegedly shared provocative content (Including videos of rioting near Dargah) on Facebook that offended the religious sentiments of a specific community, potentially exacerbating communal tensions between the two communities. Jetha Kodiyatar filed the complaint after coming across the series of posts while browsing social media. The FIR states that the accused had purportedly posted a video inciting minority community members to take matters into their own hands in response to the district authorities’ decision to demolish the religious structure.
