July 04, 2023
Junagadh: A mine that was fully utilized for minerals has been successfully converted into a rainwater storage site.
A check dam in the Kabutari mine was built by the Junagadh irrigation department behind the Rashtraveer Chhelbhai Dave police training center. It is now full of water due to good rainfall recently in the region.
The idea was floated by Range IG Mayanksinh Chavda originally and it was put forwarded to the concerned department, following which the irrigation department conducted mapping by using DGPS technology for the survey. The works of building the check dam were completed within 5 months after it was proposed.
There are 4 meter high land on both sides of the check dam and the central flow area is 30 meter wide. There is a 2-meter high body-wall and the water spread is across 35 thousand square meters. The water body created using idle and fully utilized mine stores 2.14 million cubic feet of water. It results in an improvement in groundwater in an 8 km area around. DeshGujarat
