Governor assents to Gujarat Common Universities Bill
September 28, 2023
Gandhinagar: Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat signed The Gujarat Common Universities Bill of 2023, which was approved in the state assembly on September 16 amid the long-standing protests by college teachers.
These educators had been voicing their opposition to the bill since its introduction in 2001. It has been learned that the government will soon commence the process of establishing the regulatory framework for implementing the Act in the upcoming academic year. Despite this development, teachers’ organizations continue to resist the bill, advocating for certain modifications. Sources indicate that the government does not intend to make any alterations to the fundamental provisions of the bill. Recently, teachers affiliated with an association staged a protest in Vadodara.
On the other hand, the ABVP is urging the inclusion of a provision in the Public Universities Act for the election of student unions. The resolutions also seek clarification regarding the representation of students on various important committees within universities as specified under the Act. DeshGujarat
