Morbi contributes 80% of India’s ceramic exports and 75% of wall clock production

Gandhinagar: Gujarat is gearing up for the 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit scheduled from January 10 to 12, 2024. In the built up to VGGS, the ‘Vibrant Gujarat-Vibrant District’ Program is being organized in the state from October 2 to October 31. This initiative includes several events in 33 districts. As a part of the “One District, One Product” initiative, products chosen from every district will be given importance in the 3-day exhibition.

The ‘Vibrant Gujarat-Vibrant Morbi’ event is scheduled in Morbi on October 9, 2023, in the presence of Minister of State for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Shri Jagadish Vishwakarma. Under the ODOP initiative, ceramic tiles and sanitary ware have been chosen from Morbi. Today, Morbi stands as the leading ceramic hub in India, boasting over 1000 manufacturing units specializing in ceramic tiles, sanitary ware, industrial ceramics, and technical ceramics. Morbi alone contributes to nearly 90% of India’s ceramic products market share.

Morbi’s Ceramic Industry employs 4 lakh people

Morbi district’s ceramic cluster ranks as the world’s second-largest producer of ceramic products. With around 1000 ceramic units, the district achieves an annual turnover of approximately ₹60,000 crore. These units collectively provide direct and indirect employment to approximately 4,00,000 people. In the financial year 2022-23, Gujarat’s ceramic sector exports exceeded ₹15,000 crore, comprising 80% of India’s total ceramic exports, with Morbi district’s ceramic cluster alone contributing over ₹12,000 crore to this figure.

Morbi can also lead Gujarat in the polypack industry

Much like the ceramic industry, Morbi has the potential to emerge as a prominent district in the polypack industry in the future. Currently, there are a total of 200 units producing PP woven products in Morbi district. The polypack industry in Morbi presently manufactures around 500,000 metric tonnes (MT) of PP woven fabric each year, resulting in an annual turnover of approximately ₹5500 crore. This sector provides direct and indirect employment to approximately 15,000 to 20,000 people in Morbi.

Morbi contributes to 75% of India’s wall clock production

Along with the development of ceramics and polypacks, the wall clock and gift article industry in Morbi has experienced substantial growth. This sector accounts for a substantial 75% share of India’s total wall clock production and houses approximately 80 to 90 wall clock units. The industry provides employment, both direct and indirect, for an estimated 18,000 individuals, with a majority( 16,000) being women. Morbi’s wall clock industry is currently manufacturing around 1.5 lakh wall clock pieces and gift articles per day, boasting an impressive annual turnover ranging from ₹600-700 crore. Out of this, wall clocks and gift articles worth ₹50-60 crore are exported.

Other Industries in Morbi

Being home to a diverse range of industries, there are over 60 units dedicated to the paper mill industry, with a combined investment of approximately ₹3,000 crore.
