92.25% of broad gauge route electrified; 59% done under Modi govt in Centre

New Delhi: The Indian Railways is currently undertaking the electrification of its entire broad gauge route, with 60,451 route kilometers of the total broad gauge lines electrified as of November 1st this year. However, approximately 59% of this route was electrified during the last nine years of the Modi government.

According to government data, from the pre-independence year of 1925 until 2014, only 21,801 route kilometers of broad gauge lines were electrified in the country. This figure has now jumped to 60,451 route kilometers by October of this year. Notably, 35,560 route kilometers of electrification were accomplished in the past nine years after the NDA government led by Narendra Modi came to power in the central government. The total broad gauge line spans 65,526 route kilometers.

As of November 1, 2023, 92.25% of the broad gauge, accounting for 60,451 route kilometers, has been electrified nationwide.

In terms of achieving 100% electrification, 14 states or Union territories have completed the electrification process. These include Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Odisha, Puducherry, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

On the other hand, if we look at the average route kilometers electrified on a daily basis in the current year, it stands at 23.7 route kilometers per day. For the period of 2019-2023, it was 16.0 route kilometers per day. During the first NDA government (2014-2019) led by PM Modi, an average of 7.5 route kilometers of broad gauge lines were being electrified.
