With all numbers in his favor, Modi to take oath as PM for 3rd time; Here is the number game
June 06, 2024
New Delhi: The results of the General Election for the Lok Sabha 2024 were announced on Tuesday, and it has become clear that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will form the government. The NDA has won 293 seats in total, which is 21 more than the halfway mark of 272 seats needed to form a union government. On the other hand, the opposition’s INDIA Alliance has secured 234 seats.
Today, all the leaders of NDA parties held a meeting at the Prime Minister’s House at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg in Delhi and unanimously elected Narendra Modi as their leader, which means he will be taking the oath as Prime Minister for the third time.
There are 543 seats in the Lok Sabha. At least 272 seats are required to form the government. Here is a look at the statistics of the Lok Sabha under different scenarios.
The BJP-led NDA coalition won 293 seats.
First scenario: If Chandrababu’s TDP abandons the NDA…
The NDA has 293 seats, out of which TDP has 16 seats. If TDP leaves, the NDA will be left with 277 seats, 5 seats more than the majority. The NDA will still form the government.
293 – 16 = 277 (5 more than the majority)
Second scenario: If Nitish’s JDU leaves the NDA…
The NDA has 293 seats, out of which JDU has 12 seats. If JDU leaves, the NDA will have 281 seats, 9 seats more than the majority. The NDA will still form the government.
293 – 12 = 281 (9 more than the majority)
Third scenario: If both TDP and JDU leave the NDA…
Together, TDP and JDU have 28 seats. If their seats are subtracted from the NDA’s total of 293 seats, the figure comes to 265, i.e., 7 seats short of the majority. In that case, the NDA government will lack a majority.
293 – 28 = 265 (7 seats short of the majority)
The NDA has a majority in the first and second scenarios. In case the pre-poll alliance gets a majority, the President invites the NDA leader to form the government. Being the leader of the coalition, Modi will take the oath as Prime Minister.
In the third scenario, even though the NDA will fall short of the majority, the President as per tradition will invite them to form the government as the largest coalition. Even in this situation, Narendra Modi will take the oath as Prime Minister. However, they will need 8 seats to prove the majority on the floor of the house.
This time, independents and several smaller parties, which are not part of any coalition, have won a total of 17 seats. These parties can support the government through a post-poll alliance or by supporting the movement from outside. In both cases, the NDA government will stay in power.
Party Name | Seats | |
1 | Bharatiya Janata Party | 240 |
2 | Telugu Desam Party | 16 |
3 | Janata Dal (United) | 12 |
4 | Shiv Sena | 7 |
5 | Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) | 5 |
6 | Rashtriya Lok Dal | 2 |
7 | Janata Dal (Secular) | 2 |
8 | Jana Sena Party | 2 |
9 | Asom Gana Parishad | 1 |
10 | United People’s Party Liberal | 1 |
11 | All Jharkhand Students Union | 1 |
12 | Apna Dal (Sonelal) | 1 |
13 | Hindustani Awam Morcha | 1 |
14 | Nationalist Congress Party | 1 |
15 | Sikkim Krantikari Morcha | 1 |
Total seats of NDA | 293 |
Can the India Alliance form a government? Let’s understand:
First scenario: If JDU leaves the NDA and joins the India Alliance…
JDU has 12 seats. If it joins the India Alliance, its tally will reach 246. Even then, it will be 28 seats short of the majority.
234 + 12 = 246 (26 seats short of the majority)
Second scenario: If TDP leaves the NDA and joins the India Alliance…
TDP has won 16 seats. If it joins the India Alliance, its figure will reach 250. Even then, the India Alliance will remain 22 seats short of the majority.
234 + 16 = 250 (22 seats short of the majority)
Third scenario: If both JDU and TDP join the India Alliance…
Together, TDP and JDU have 28 seats. If they join the India Alliance, the figure will reach 262. Even then, the India Alliance will be 10 seats short of the majority.
234 + 28 = 262 (10 seats short of the majority)
It is clear from the results that the numbers are in favor of the NDA, and Narendra Modi is slated to become the Prime Minister for the third time.
Traditionally, the President of India invites the largest alliance or the largest party to form the government. In this election, the NDA is the largest alliance with 293 seats, and the BJP is the largest party with 240 seats. Even if a few NDA allies defect and the India Alliance claims a majority, the President can exercise his constitutional powers and invite the BJP to form the government as the largest party. However, in that case, the Union Government will have to prove their majority through a floor test in the Parliament. DeshGujarat
