Creeks flooding in Surat: Water starts receding as rain takes break

Surat: Since last Sunday evening, Surat has been pounded by relentless heavy rainfall, resulting in alarming rises in the levels of its five major creeks: Kakra, Bhedwad, Mithi, Bhatena, and Seemada. The intense downpours have led to severe flooding, with Bhedwad Creek overflowing on Wednesday, the nearby area became waterlogged with the dirty creek water.

While Bhedwad Creek’s levels receded slightly in the night, Seemada Creek remained overflowing, and other creeks, including Mithi Khadi, were flowing at dangerous levels. The deluge inundated 22 locations across the city, with many neighborhoods grappling with significant sewage backups.

However, there has been a halt in rain since this morning, causing the water levels in Kakra and Bhedwad creeks to reduce. The surface of Kakra Khadi reached 6.45 meters, while Bhedwad Bay rose to 5.50 meters. The level of Mithi Khadi, which reached 9 meters, also began to recede in the Mithi Bay area.

The level of Bhatena Creek was 6.40 meters, and the level of Seemada Creek was 4.50 meters. As the water began to recede in the bay area, Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal ordered the spraying of medicine and cleaning in the affected areas, and cleaning operations were initiated.

Several areas in the Limbayat Zone, where Mithi Khadi passes, were flooded. These include Mithi Khadi Slum Area, Bethi Colony, Patrani Chal, Indira Awas, Kranti Nagar, Rao Nagar, Ratanji Nagar, Kamru Nagar, Garib Nawaz Nagar, and Om Nagar.

In the Limbayat area near Mithi Khadi, around 50,000 people have been trapped in water for the past three and a half days.

The Rasulabad, Ambedkar Nagar, and Azad Nagar areas of Bhatar adjacent to Kakra Khadi were also flooded. Similarly, Khasad, Kathodara, Pasodara, adjacent to Seemada Creek, and rural areas such as Valam Nagar Society, Sarthana Vraj Chowk, Sania Hemad, Saroli Village, and Bharat Cancer Hospital Road were inundated. Sanjay Nagar, Moraji Colony, Krishna Nagar, RJA Nagar, and Nagsen Nagar along the banks of Bhedwad Creek also saw rising water level.

Due to the floods, 955 people were evacuated on Wednesday, and fire department boats have been deployed in many areas. More than 17,700 food packets have been distributed to displaced and affected individuals.

Even posh areas of the city, such as Vesu and VIP Road, have experienced waterlogging. There was knee-deep water near Khatushyam Temple and Bhagwan Mahaveer College on VIP Road for a prolonged period. DeshGujarat
